![]() The Alexander Muss Institute for Israel Education (AMIIE) is a non-profit organization which offers an intensive eight-week academic experience to American high school juniors and seniors from across the United States five times each calendar year through its premier educational program, the Alexander Muss High School in Israel (AMHSI). AMHSI is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. AMHSI believes that the conceptual world of each student who participates in the program will be expanded as s/he develops academically, socially and as an independent thinker as a result of his/her experience in this carefully structured and monitored program. AMHSI is further committed to the philosophy that each student will best develop in an atmosphere that respects and advances academic and ethical standards consistent with the highest American ideals. BackgroundSince its inception in 1972, AMHSI has developed an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning which utilizes the unique historic, geographic and human resources of the country of Israel. The text-based core program is composed of class study and on-site field studies in an integrated and contiguous curriculum. The core curriculum focuses on the study of the land and the peoples of Israel in the context of the overall development of Western Civilization. Each student experiences for him/herself a complete immersion into the history, culture and civilization of Israel, with the course spanning the historical periods chronologically from the Middle Bronze Age (Biblical Period) to the present. The quality of the core program is such that many students are eligible to receive six semester college credits.Core CurriculumThe core curriculum is constantly reviewed and modified as new content is developed and contemporary educational theory is considered. To this end, AMHSI supports the continuing education of its teachers and professional staff. Our core faculty are all highly experienced and educated, with most of the faculty possessing advanced degrees. The student-teacher ratio is 20:1.SequentialsIn addition to the core curriculum, the AMHSI Sequential Studies Program offers small group instruction classes in Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language, Humanities and other courses. Students who are enrolled in these courses in their home schools bring their assigned textbooks and course outlines to Israel. Instruction is properly arranged in advance so that the home school's curriculum is thoroughly covered in Israel. Each student remains on target and accomplishes mastery of sequential course skills and concepts. Sequential teachers are also in direct contact with students' home school teachers and/or administrators to ensure that students are on tagret. Most students are able to stay in touch with their home schools through the Internet from the AMHSI campus.Working with Home SchoolsAMHSI specializes in working with course schedules to meet students' needs as well as the needs of the home school. In order to facilitate this process, the Director of Admissions confers regularly with the Guidance Counselors and other local school personnel to work out each student's academic schedule so that a correlation exists between the requirements of the two schools. AMHSI works in concert with the home school to ensure that each student is protected academically.Student Life in IsraelThe school's climate optimizes educational opportunities resulting from the blend of AMHSI's unique geographic location and its highly specialized academic staff. Life on the school's campus is orderly, yet free and comfortable. It has the atmosphere of being on a camp. There are many opportunities for the exchange of thought and learning between students and faculty and between the AMHSI students and young Israelis. Students are encouraged to learn about life in Israel through meeting local citizens and visiting the homes of local families. Our PhilosophyAMIIE / AMHSI understands and respects the reality that each student is a unique individual with special needs, interests and cultural orientations as well as differences in abilities and personal qualities. In addition, we believe that each student has an obligation to be a responsible and active member of the school community as well as a gracious guest of a host country. AMIIE / AMHSI welcomes the challenge to build each class into a synergetic unit while helping each student achieve a higher level of personal and academic accomplishment.Visit UsAmerican public and private school educators are continuously encouraged to visit and evaluate the quality of the program. AMHSI's doors are always open to any educators who wish to visit. We invite educators from public and private schools alike to contact the Director of Admissions in your region for further information. |
Parent Testimonials"...I want to compliment you also on the fact that the communication both to the kids and the parents is excellent! The program is very well thought out, very well structured, and very appropriate. Their needs are more than being met. I am particularly impressed with the communication in general each week and particularly yesterday - your email, the hotline, and having the kids call. And the photos on-line make us feel like we are there and traveling with you!"
"...I cannot begin to express my gratitude for the impact this school and its people has made upon Emily. She calls me often to tell me of ALL her adventures, learning, and self reflection. She has grown and learned without a doubt more in these summer weeks than EVER before. Please accept my sincere thanks and let her counselors and teachers know what a wonderful job they have done. I also want to say thanks for taking the time to document all of their travels and daily learning. I have enjoyed them immensely!"
"...AMHSI absolutely rescued my oldest daughter, who was adrift in a public school curriculum she found uninspiring; the spring semester of her senior year was transformed overnight into a time of high adventure, rich friendships, and Jewish commitment. A few years later, The Muss High School in Israel confirmed and deepened my son's interest in Israel, inspiring him to return for a year of study after high school and to minor in Jewish studies in college. Both kids fell in love with their teachers, with their texts, with their friends, and with the land of Israel. My husband and I look forward to sending our younger children to Muss as soon as possible."
